Germany Student Checklist 2026 — Blocked Account, Visa, Anmeldung

Germany has the most mandatory upfront spending of any common Erasmus destination. Your visa file cannot be opened until the blocked account and insurance are in place, and doing these out of order is what pushes appointment dates back by weeks. The sequence below is the one that closes the file with the least waiting.

Mandatory first-year costs

Blocked account (Sperrkonto) balance€11,904Released at up to €992 per month. This is your own money, not a fee — but it has to sit in the account for the visa.
Blocked account setup + monthly fee€119–159 + €9–9.90/moVaries by provider. This part is a genuine cost.
Visa fee~€75 consular feeAgencies charge considerably more; you can file the application yourself.
Health insurancevariesMust cover the whole stay and be accepted for Schengen.

What to do, in order

  1. 1. Open the blocked account

This is the precondition for the visa application, so do it first. Confirmation letters take anywhere from two days to two weeks depending on the provider. Compare total first-year cost, not just the headline setup fee — the monthly charge adds up.

  2. 2. Get health insurance

Part of the visa file. It must cover your entire stay and be valid for Schengen. Note that your university may separately require German public health insurance at enrolment — that is handled during registration week, not now.

  3. 3. Book the visa appointment

Book once you hold the blocked account confirmation and the insurance policy. In peak season appointment slots run four to eight weeks out, so check early.

  4. 4. Secure housing

Studentenwerk halls are the cheapest option but the waiting list is long and applications open months before term. On the private market a single room runs €400–800 depending on the city. Never send money before verifying the landlord and the contract — rental scams specifically target arriving international students.

  5. 5. Register your address (Anmeldung) on arrival

Done at the Bürgeramt after you move in. Your bank account, phone contract and residence permit all depend on it. In cities like Berlin appointments are genuinely hard to get — checking the portal every morning is the normal advice.

  6. 6. Phone line and bank account

You need connectivity from day one; an eSIM lets you activate a line before you land. Opening a German bank account gets much easier once the Anmeldung is done.

Frequently asked

Do I get the blocked account money back?

Yes. The €11,904 is your money, paid out to you in monthly instalments. The only real cost is the setup fee and the monthly account charge.

Can I get a visa without a blocked account?

An Erasmus grant or an official scholarship letter can sometimes substitute for proof of funds, but the consulate may still require a blocked account for the remainder. Check the current requirements of your specific consulate before applying.

Do I need a rental contract for the Anmeldung?

You need either the contract or a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). An Airbnb booking is usually not accepted.
