Netherlands Student Checklist 2026 — BSN, City Registration, Housing

In the Netherlands almost everything hangs off your BSN number: bank account, insurance, the right to work. And you can only get a BSN once you have an address. That is why the correct order here starts with housing, unlike most other countries.

Typical first-month costs

Single room (monthly)€600–800Amsterdam and Utrecht start at the top of the range.
Deposit1–2 months rentUsually paid upfront.
Health insurancevariesMandatory for non-EU students.
Second-hand bicycle€80–150The de facto standard for getting around.

What to do, in order

  1. 1. Sort housing first

A BSN needs an address, and an address needs a contract — so housing comes first. University housing opens roughly two months before term and fills on day one. Verify the landlord and the contract before paying anything.

  2. 2. Book the municipal registration (inschrijving)

You register with the municipality where you live. Appointments can run two weeks out, so book as soon as your address is confirmed. Bring the rental contract or a written permission from the landlord.

  3. 3. Collect your BSN

Issued once the registration is complete. It cannot be obtained before you arrive, so plan for that delay when scheduling bank and insurance tasks in your first weeks.

  4. 4. Insurance and bank account

With a BSN in hand you can open a Dutch bank account and arrange local health insurance. Insurance is mandatory if you are coming from outside the EU.

Frequently asked

Can I get a BSN before arriving?

No. Municipal registration requires a valid Dutch address, so the BSN is only issued after you arrive.

Can I register with an Airbnb address?

Usually not. Registration requires a rental contract or written permission from the landlord.

How do I avoid rental scams?

Never transfer a deposit before seeing the property or going through a platform with payment protection. Asking to verify the landlord’s identity and ownership is entirely normal.
