Starting in Krakow and finishing in Budapest is a straight line geographically, and on price it runs the useful way round — Vienna sits in the middle and Budapest lets you recover the budget at the end.

3 nightsThe old town is walkable end to end, and Kazimierz fills with students in the evening. Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka salt mine are both day trips — do not try to combine them, it is exhausting.

Next stop: Night bus to Prague takes 8 hours, the train 7. The bus is cheaper and saves a night’s accommodation.

Prague
2 nightsThe centre is crowded and expensive; the real pleasure is out in Vinohrady and Žižkov. Castle early in the morning, bridge at sunrise — by afternoon both are packed.
Where to stay: Hostel or boutique hotel (Žižkov) · €15–35 / night
Next stop: Train to Vienna, 4 hours, frequent departures. Very cheap booked in advance.

Vienna
2 nightsThe most expensive stop on the route, so keep it short. Student discounts at the museums are substantial — carry your student card. Naschmarkt is the cheap lunch answer.
Where to stay: Hostel (student halls become hostels in summer) · €20–40 / night
Next stop: Train to Budapest, 2.5 hours. The easiest leg of the route.

Budapest
3 nightsThis is where the budget recovers — food and accommodation are the cheapest on the route. The baths and ruin bars are the known part; the real difference is crossing to the Buda side and walking.

- Putting Auschwitz and Wieliczka on the same day — both take more than half a day and you lose the day.
- Treating Vienna as the centre and staying long; it is the most expensive stop and it drains the budget.
- Leaving train tickets to the last day. The same service can triple in price.
- Exchanging all four currencies at the airport — the spread is significant.
Worth knowing
- Book train tickets three to four weeks ahead; prices climb steeply near the date.
- Three of the four countries do not use the euro (zł, Kč, Ft). Avoid airport exchange desks.
- A night bus saves a night’s accommodation but costs you the next day. Use it once at most.
- The ESN student card gives regular discounts on museums and transport.
