High summer is hot and expensive; spring and autumn are when this route actually works. Barcelona to Lisbon is a long way, so flying one leg saves both time and money — usually Madrid to Porto.

The cheapest and most relaxed stop on the route. The Douro riverside and the cellars are the known part; staying over in Vila Nova de Gaia is cheaper and has the view.

It is hilly — taking accommodation at the top of a slope saves half an hour a day. Sintra is an essential day trip, but leave early; the queues build through the afternoon.

Common mistakes

Going in high summer. Madrid passes 40 °C and the city is unwalkable during the day.
Not buying Gaudí tickets before you travel — they sell out days ahead.
Going to Sintra in the afternoon; queues build up, an early start is essential.
Trying to do Madrid–Porto by train. It takes 10+ hours; flying is faster and usually cheaper.

Worth knowing

In high summer Madrid and Seville pass 40 °C; move the trip to spring or autumn.
In Spain many places close between 14:00 and 17:00 — plan around it.
Portugal is clearly cheaper than Spain, so the budget eases towards the end of the route.
Domestic flights booked early beat the train on price, but check the baggage fee.
